Face In The Sun | What She Already Knew

Face In The Sun | What She Already Knew

I put my face in the sun

It feels like a piece of summer—

the light,

the warmth,

the longer days building.

Time slows when I do this.

The warm air around me, in the breeze, shining down. Surrounded by this force, all I can do is soak it in.

Children, too, I think, are like this, a force to take in. Having them. Raising them. Then…what?

My oldest daughter is about to graduate and leave for college. She was asked to write a commencement speech as one of her last high school assignments.

She came bounding into my bedroom the other night—classic her, late for me. I'm tucked in, ready to doze off, her body coming online as the owl she is. Help me. What should I write about? Her energy, the opposite of mine.

I threw out some ideas, none of them good. Grew frustrated. So tired. Reminded her that when the street lights come on, I wind down. I kicked her out. But the question grabbed me. What would inspire her class as they head into adulthood? It crawled into my consciousness as I drifted to sleep.

I woke early and wrote an intro.

When she woke up, I was excited to share. Oh, I already handed it in, she says.

I ask to hear it. She pulls it up and reads.

It blows me away.

I tear up.

She sees herself so clearly—the way she's wired to be up late, to often be late, how this is both part of her and sometimes means she misses out. She names it without apology.

Her message: be who you are, know what you want, and show up.

I step outside, beaming, and put my face back in the sun.
